The Independence Recreation Department offers Independence residents of all ages several programs and activities throughout the multiple facilities in beautiful Elmwood Park. The Civic Center, a 78,000 square foot facility for residents to enjoy, and the Recreation Department include a high school-size gymnasium (featuring basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and more); the upstairs aerobic and workout areas with a variety of exercise classes, an indoor track, treadmills, spin bikes, elliptical and rowing machines and recumbent bikes, a fully stocked weight room with Nautilus and Universal machines and more; a racquetball court, the indoor pool area (with steamroom, sauna, whirlpool and locker rooms); and an atrium gathering space with pool, ping-pong, and air hockey tables and vending machines. It is open nearly every day of the year and has one of the lowest residential membership rates in the area. During the summer months, the outdoor pool is a great place to cool off, featuring an Olympic-size lap pool, activity pool with twenty-five foot water slide, play features including water cannons, tumble buckets and ‘rain drops’, and a whirlpool / spa for adults, as well as locker rooms and an air-conditioned concession stand!.
